View Full Version : Anna's Challenge #1

Hey girls, OK those of you that are interested in a hybrid challenge or interested in just learning a little hybrid..........this is the place and today is the day!!!!!!:thumbup1:
Hybrid Challenge #1 is to Create a 4x6 Chipboard album and I promise when you are done you will LOVE it!!!!
What do you need:
4x6 Chipboard pieces I had these cut at my local scrapbook store, or you can order them online.
Mod podge or another scrapbooking glue if you don't want to coat the outside of your pages.
Round metal craft rings, or another way to bind your book like ribbon, or zip ties......the possibilities are endless and its your choice!
Something to punch or drill two holes in your chipboard pages. I have a cropadile and love it but you can also use a drill or maybe even a strong hole punch.
Any embellisments you want to use.....ribbons are always my first choice
Completed digi 4x6 pages printed on cardstock. You are welcome to use my Quips & Quotes album for this ( check in the specials section in the shoppe if you need it... its only $3 this weekend) or you can make your own.....either way is FINE :thumbup1:OK so you know what you need, now its time for what to do with all of that stuff
If your pages aren't already printed on cardstock or matte photo paper then print them now. TIP: you can print 2 4x6 pages on each sheet of cardstock
After the pages are printed cut them out with a paper trimmer or scissors. TIP: I have done a very light stroke around each of my pages so that even with a white background you can see where to cut.
Once the pages are printed and cut you are ready for the real "hybrid stuff" ...
Brush a light coat of mod podge over the first sheet of your chipboard
Put your first "page" down and smooth with your fingers or a credit card to get any bubbles out and to even out the glue.
Set the first page aside and repeat the process for each of the pages in your album.
After the pages are dry on the chipboard go over each page with another thin coat of mod podge. This will protect the pages and give it a very finished look.
Let the pages dry completely before putting the album together......trust me if you get in a hurry and they are tacky to touch they WILL stick together :lmao:
I always print a "test 4x6 page" .... punch two holes in the test page where you want your binder rings to be. Then using the test punches punch holes in each page of your album. (this ensures they will be lined up) I use a crop-a-dial for my holes but you could also use a small drill or possibly a hole punch (I haven't tried a hole punch but I think it could work)
Put your album pages in order then slip the craft rings through the holes and close.........you are now essentially DONE. The only step left is the embellishments and that is all YOU as much or as little ribbon around the rings as you want.
Sit down with your favorite beverage and look at what you've created......
Then come back to ScrapArtist post your album in the gallery and post a link to your creation here.......I absolutely can't WAIT to see what you fabulous digi girls can do with hybrid, I KNOW its going to ROCK:jumping3:
thanks for playing
xoxo

This project look soo coool ! I don't know if i'll have time to do it before the deadline but i sure will do it ! Can you tell me how thick is the chipboard you used ? And if there is a living-in-France digiscraper, can you tell me if you find Mod podge easily ? I'll have to go check that in a store nearby my house !!!! Anna i just love how your album turned out ! This is really cool !
JustAnna
01-19-2008, 02:31 PM
alice the chipboard is fairly thick but you can also use the back of a notebook or notepad ... the thicker cardboard piece on the back... Tracy this would probably work for you as well, if chipboard is hard to find. You can really use any kind of glue to adhere your pages to the chipboard, Mod Podge is great because you can add a thin layer on top of the finished page for a top coat but that step is certainly optional!
February 3rd, eh? hmmmmmm....i just may give this a shot. God knows I have enough paper scrap supplies to start my own store (according to dh anyway)! lol!:rotfl2:

Also want to add that all of my QP albums come with a blank title page just in case you don't want to do quips and quotes :) you can name it whatever you want.

Look what I've done!
My 1st hybrid album (http://www.scrapartist.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=64398)
I've used:
- Anna's Quips and Quotes quickpages
- Corina Nielsen's All about me wordart (quotes)
I've added some photos from the Project 365. I didn't have round metal rings to bind my album, so I used ribbons.
Here are the pics:

I've put blank pages (to journal or add personal notes) like this...
http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/8583/hybridpage01webve7.jpg
And also pages like this, with a pic and a quote...

I have this problem!
I use mountboard instead - this is what photographers use to mount there potraits (or used to when I was a photography student LOL). I get them from art supply and hobby shops. They come in all colours as well as white, grey, black and cream. They come in large sizes and are relatively cheap, so good value if you plan on doing more than one project.
Whilst I am talking about the UK market here, I have american friends who by this type of board for craft projects.
Hope this helps!

Lol! cereal boxes make great cardstock - I often use cardboard from Amazon packaging (we have alot of amazon 'cardstock' in our house, especially this time of year!)

Has anyone tried having them printed as regular photos then adhered to chipboard? How is the end result?

Thats what i was going to do with the rest, have them printed as regular 4x6 I will probably just get them laminated back to back :)

I had trouble downloading the Q & Q album before finally realizing my Zone Alarm/Spy Blocker was blocking the download. By then I had exceeded my 5 downloads so I'm just waiting to hear back from customer service. Anyhoo, I couldn't wait to start working on a hybrid project so I'm working on a door sign for our bathroom using the same style, etc. as the album. I'm just waiting for the final coats of Mod Podge to dry before I start adding the ribbons.

I've been lurking for a while, but I had to jump in on this challenge.
I have all of my pages printed and mounted on chipboard. Just realized that I left my Crop A Dile at work, so now I'm charging my drill. Maybe that'll be easier anyway 'cause I can do the whole stack at once.
Here's a preview. The cover and first page. I'll post the finished album later tonight.

When I tried to put Mod Podge over my pages, the ink smeared. Does anyone have a solution to that problem? I'm considering taking it to Staples to get the pages laminated. Any other suggestions?

You can get stacks of chipboard in 8.5 x 11 at Office Depot and probably Staples. I work at a school so I used the big trimmer there to cut them to size.
Your first page in gorgeous! My ink smeared, too...especially the red...

I never ever use hodge podge. If my projects are small (4x6 or 5x7) I get them printed at the photo shop. This is normally around 5 pence per print here in the UK (around 10 cents). Professionally printed photos are coated with a protective finish which is more then adequate.
If they are larger, then I print on semi-glossy paper and have never found the need to cover with hodge podge. As long as you use a really strong adhesive (extra strong pritt stick or doudle sided tape is what I use), the bond itself strengthens the project.
If the project is something that is going to be handled a lot, then I would suggest a matte varnish, applied in several very thin coats.
Also if you are printing at home; the trick to good quality finishing is using good quality paper when you print (get the best you can afford). I always use Fuji Film photo paper. It's never let me down!!!
Hope this helps :)

Angie,
This is very helpful info. I think I'll upload them and have them printed professionally. That should work perfectly.
Thanks so much.

I don't use modpodge ever on my photo's
just print them onto shiny photopaper or let them print at a photobooth or online lab. Just glue the photo's backsides to eachother with doublesided tape or something like that. The problem with selfprinted photo's is most likely that the ink is not waterproof
