I loved the March/April article in Somerset Studio Magazine by Jennifer Black with the same title of this challenge "The inner lives of women" so I thought I would use it as inspiration for this week's altered/collage challenge!

She started the article out by saying "If you're like most women you keep a small piece of yourself secreted away from judging eyes. Maybe you are a lawyer who paints by night - or a scrapbooker who longs for chaotic mixed media. Do you have a shoebox full of dreams on a top shelf, or a journal you hurriedly close when someone enters the room? Don't worry, you're not alone!"

All of us have secret lives that are so rich and powerful that they would probably really surprise our closest friends and family. Jennifer suggested that there is no better way to celebrate those inner lives than with art that both hides and shares our secrets!

Participants in this challenge are invited to use this inspiration in any creative way they would like. My proposal is to create what Jennifer suggested, covered matchboxes, either altered, or created from scratch with a template like the one found here:

http://www.ruthannzaroff.com/mirkwooddesigns/matchbox.htm

You can glue, paint, glitter, whatever your heart desires, in order to alter the exterior, or do what i did, which was to create a digital piece that I wrapped around the box cover. You can fill it with whatever you wish, skies the limit! It is your secret, or you can share your secret with us! A love letter, a diorama tribute to a heroine, or just a little place to stash a cherished necklace. Whatever you do, your theme will be the "Inner Life of Women"....

And if you choose to create a purely digital piece, please share that with us too...whatever you do, please come and post here the link to your art from our altered collage category. We are excited to see where this challenge takes you!

Here is my box:

Enjoy the process! :)

I'm REALLY going to do it ... I'm going to get out some scissors! We'll see what it looks like in a few days after the glue dries! I can't believe you do this to me Christine. You know I'm strictly digital and IRL stuff scares me silly. But I tell all of you other ladies ... if I can do it, anyone can! OR... use Christine's option to do it totally digital. Great challenge!

Ooooh....a cigar box! That'll be so cool! I can't wait to see it, Adee!

I used to get cigar boxes from the local smoke shop for free, but that was years ago before the mad purse and box altering craze started....now they charge five or more bucks each! That just irks me!

I hope you get a chance, Tress. The matchbox project takes very little time, and it was so fun to assemble, I'm planning on making dozens more! (I already made one for my mom and sis, and am taking out old layouts and fitting them to the template to make myself more of them!)

They are great little storage places for small items, and I'm finding I actually REMEMBER what I put in each because of the visual association of the layouts I used on the box, lol!

Perfect malacima. I'm a digital girl, too. I love the layout of the necklace. And your English is just fine! No need to apologize.

EEEEEK! I do NOT like scissors and templates are NOT my friend! ROFL! I came home from work determined to do something cool and before I knew it, I was swearing at that darned template. Tabs ... dotted lines ... solid lines ... cut here ... fold there???!!! All too complicated for my digi brain! But, alas, I did complete the project! Drumroll please ... Believe (http://www.scrapartist.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=45112)

Robyn! My brave-hearted friend! I am so happy you took the plunge and gave it a go! I love the result too! Your paper looks wonderful put to use like that!

If anyone still wants to give this challenge a try, and didn't have enough time in a week, remember these challenges are open ended. Post at any point you've completed it!

Tomorrow will bring a new fun challenge, but I'd still love to see anyone who makes their matchbox, post it in the gallery! :)

Here's mine!

Altered Matchboxes (http://www.scrapartist.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=45139&limit=recent)

I'm with Robyn on the folding, cutting and pasting. It took me an hour and a half, but I LOVE them and I'll definitely be making more!

Aja - these are gorgeous! I'd say you mastered the template!

OK ... cracking up here! I JUST figured out what my problem was with the template. I'm almost embarrassed to admit this. Um ... so the template is for the INSIDE of the matchbook! ROFL! I wondered why it didn't work so well on the outside part and why the flaps covered everything. My brain simply does NOT work in crafty ways. But please give me points for effort.

Wait, so you mean you didn't see the pattern for the outside you only saw the box (inside) pattern and tried to make it look like it had a box top?

tee hee...ive done stuff like that before!
