I know that this was a big mystery to me when i first started digi-scrapping!

I'd open a file with 6 brads or a full alphabet on ONE giant .png file, then had NO clue how to just get one letter or that one pink brad off the file...

So i hope this might help someone............
(like most digi things, this may not work w/ all programs and is NOT the only way to accomplish this task!)

Here's how **I** do it in PSCS2....

{Separating items stuck on ONE .png file}
* I open up the file i want to cut up (ie. a full alpha)

* And i have my layout that i want that alpha to go on, open as well.

* I use my rectangular marquee tool and frame around the letter i want... so now i have a nice little rectangle around the letter "L"

* Then i click on my "move tool" (which is just to the right of the marquee tool) and drag the "L" from the first file, over to my layout file! It ends up on it's own layer on layout! Then you just move it around to the spot you want it!

* If you need another letter, brad, etc....just grab your rectangular marquee tool again and click back into the .png file w/ the alphabet on it!

Rinse and repeat! ;)

HTH!
