OK - this is really a simple tip, but it can be so helpful with photo editing! It's about using the full capabilities of the Crop tool.
First off, when you go to the Crop Tool if you hit that button that says "Front Image" it's going to tell you the exact measurements and resolutions of your original image. That's sometimes helpful to know before you set out to crop! :) If you hit "Clear" those values will clear out of those fields.
Many times you want to crop an image but not just to "any proportions"... you want it so it will fit into a 5 by 7 frame, or a 3 by 5 frame, etc. and you might want it at a different resolution than the image is currently in. Go ahead and enter those proportions in the width and heigth fields and enter a new resolution if you desire that as well.
Now when you go to crop the image, the crop tool will only allow you to crop it to the proportions you have stated you would like. Once you accept your crop, it will resize to your new resolution as well! :)
