It's a photo editing tip, but I think it's pretty cool! :)
To select the "brightest parts of your image" hold down
Control-Alt-~
You can then darken that area, or alter it from there... it's great for toning down highlights a bit, or you can bringing out details in the shadows if you Invert your selection before editing.
