OK, often when I want to align certain objects (ie. alphabet letters, or other elements like buttons, etc.) I will put in a guide and have them "snap to guide", but here's another way that you can get your objects to allign:
If you have multiple objects and you want to line them up you can easily do so by linking them together and using any one of the alignment buttons that appear (up on the top) when you have the move tool selected.
Works pretty slick, and doesn't require a guide on your document. Either way works good, but I thought I would put this method out there for those of you who might not be familiar with it! :)
