being brand new, I have no clue how she did the beautiful, cut-work on the layout. My jaw is still on the floor. Is this some kind of brush work?

I love that look too! There's a couple of ways to do it, but Jenn (aka Scraprascal) did a great tutorial on her method a while back, you can find it here . . .

I would say it's brushwork, I've done similar in some of my layouts. I use Photoshop CS2, so it might be different depending on what program you use, but this is what I do...
Create a new layer. Select the brush tool, set it to 100% in opacity and flow. I don't worry about colour at this stage, but if anything, I'd recommend setting it to white or black. Choose which design you want to use and brush it onto the layout. I also don't worry about the position but I always make sure the whole brush is on the page so I don't lose any edges in case I want to move it around. Then, open the paper you want to decorate the brush with. Paste the paper onto a new layer on top of the brush layer. You then need to group it with the previous layer (highlight the paper layer and press Ctrl+Alt+G in CS2, I think it's just Ctrl+G in previous versions) so it will take the shape of the layer beneath it - your brush.
There are some other ways to do it, but it's the one I prefer as you can then move the two layers seperately - great if you're using a patterned paper so you can line up the best parts to show on the brush.
