Well I know that a lot of you have very few heritage photos so I thought I would change things up a bit this week and give you the picture. I dug through my own heritage layouts and selected my least favorite one. I LOVE the picture but just don't feel I presented it very well and my style has changed a lot since I created this layout almost 2 years ago. Anyway, the challenge this week is to take my picture and re-do my layout! To download the high resolution image ... CLICK HERE (http://www.robynengland.com/images/sa/msa-tree.jpg). A preview of the picture is below and my original layout is here: Up A Tree in 1910 (http://www.scrapartist.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=13000&limit=last7).

For those of you wanting to scrap your own pictures - I totally understand so for you guys, the challenge is to scraplift any of the heritage layouts in my gallery (http://www.scrapartist.com/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuser=1707). (I also have a heritage gallery at SBB (http://www.scrapbook-bytes.com/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=9649) with some of my older layouts.) Have fun!!

I forgot about this information! After I made the layout, I wrote my great uncle to see if he knew about the picture because one of the ladies in the picture is his mom. Here is what he had to say:

The lady in the tree with Mom was a friend that she worked with at the Lufkin rule company in Saginaw (Michigan). I don't know her maiden name, but when she married it was to a Ben Heckathorn. Her first name was Hazel. They were very good friends with my Mom and Dad up thru the 30's and then time and distance took their toll. I would guess the picture was taken near Saginaw Bay around 1913 to 1915. They used to take the Interurban train there often and have picnics and hang out. A wagon was pulled up to the tree and the girls were helped into the branches. There were many more parks and such back in those days as that was their way of having a great time. The Interurban was like an electric street car with a side rail that was charged and an arm came out from the side of the car and made rolling contact with the rail and provided energy to the electric motors. The tokens cost five cents. at that time Mom made eleven cents an hour at the Lufkin, worked eight to ten hours a day and paid two dollars a week to her land lady for room and board. Mom and Dad met there at Lufkin Rule and they were married in 1915. Later Dad went to the Erg Motor company and they rented a house in South Saginaw on Bundy street. My brother Bob was born there. Hope his little synopsis helps you with your project. If you have any more questions I will try to be more on the ball in answering.

Hummm, well, now you have done it! I finally get a chance to scraplift which is what I choose to do instead of re do the picture layout. The one I posted has a link it to your layout in the gallery. I know I can never be as great as you, but it was fun to try!!! :)

Robyn,

What a fun challenge! I really enjoyed doing this. I was going to use a paper kit, but once I got into it and was reading the letter from your Uncle I had the idea of using some "old" images which he makes reference to in the letter.

I learned from this challenge that I need to write more/do more journaling on my layouts. I think I'll even ask my parents for some help in writing things down. I'm sure it would make my scrapbooks much more personal and meaningful.

Here's my version:

I am so happy this challenge made you realize the importance of journaling. Without it - a picture is just a picture! YES! Talk to your parents and any other older family members that are still alive! All of my grandparents are gone now and I am so happy that I have their stories to pass on to future generations. Love your layout!! Thanks for taking the challenge this week.

hi robyn this is my feeeeeble attempt at your photo - especially after seeing the other great LOs... I wanted to put an older person in there to show this lady in later years, as if she is looking back, so my mother in law's photo has gone in there to portray this lady!

and i am almost finished a scrap lift of yours, post next couple days

Sorry to hassle but I am having trouble working out when things are on. I went to start something only to find that it is over. I know I should have looked at the dates and worked it out but I didn't. I assumed that it was still there as it was on the board. Could you tell me when things start such as is there a certain time you do things. eg. Tuesdays we do chats and Wednesdays we do layouts atc. I live in Australia and so hav:) e to get myself organised for things. Such as this morning I go up at 5 am to do the chat only to discover that I was an hour late because the second email came in when I was asleep. I received the zip code thank you very much as I do love it but I wanted to join in. I know that this one was impromptu so I am not complaining I would just like to get organised so I can do them.

Welcome to SA!!! So glad you are here! Just about all of the challenges are posted on Monday mornings and they last a week. As far as chats - they are usually scheduled ahead of time. We do chats about every other month. Be sure to sign up for the newsletter and you will receive updates on the times for those. You can also click on the Calendar link above and it will tell you the challenge schedule. Let me know if you have any other questions. I am off to post this week's Heritage Challenge now.

Also - feel free to do past challenges!!! We love to see that!
