No ... that's not a typo! The challenge this week is a journaling challenge and a design challenge. But don't think it is a hard one. This is simple, simple! But it can produce an awesome layout. OH! Did I mention that we are creating a two pager??!!

Here's what we are doing. Page one is a black background with a black and white picture. Page 2 is a black background with journaling about the picture on page 1. So easy! I can't wait to read the stories you come up with.

Here are my samples: Ralph England Page 1 (http://www.scrapartist.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=11179&limit=last7) and Page 2 (http://www.scrapartist.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=11180&limit=last7)

Remember ... pictures should be from the 1970's and before.

Simple my butt!  I think you might have had too many chocolates this weekend! The only good news is at least I will get to the other challenges first this week as for the past two weeks they have been shouldered aside by the heritage challenge. If it is a journalistic challenge, I suspect mine will have to be of the "New of the World" tabloid variety.

Your take on this is so stark (uh, yeah, I guess that is what black and white comes across as, duh!) and has full impact (no pun intended at all--it looks like it was an absolutely horrific accident and so tragic).

Come on Kim ... say what you mean. I know you are a good Scottish girl and no good Scot would be heard saying "butt." I wanna hear it!! You know what I'm talkin' about! Here - let me just say what your mom might have actually said in that fight about frommage:

"And ye dinna get cheese, you got frommage you big arse!"

I guess that's ok that you're doing my challenge last :( ... maybe you should start with the altered one this week :D !!

Lol, Robyn--I actually have a few t-shirts that say "Scottish Girls kick Arse"--however, that is probably profane and you are gonna get me kicked off this site. Hmmm, one of those t-shirts is in black and white...

That's my evil plan! Would make a cool layout though.

This does not sound at all easy to me either.

I do have a photo in mind though....my husband's great grandfather who was born during the Civil War...and a written interview that we have from him given to his daughter in law (who was my husband's grandma).

You guys are making this too hard! Simple stuff here - just pick a picture and write about it. Doesn't have to be elaborate at all. Just tell what you know about the picture or how you feel when you look at the picture. Future generations will thank you!!!

Hi everybody!
Ok Robyn, you know what ?! I can never resist to one of your Heritage challenge. ;)
This week, it was not easy for me because you wanted a lot of journaling and I'm a bit anxious about journaling because English is not my mother tongue. But you know what, let's try!

So here are my 2 LOs:

And again, I'm sorry if there are some mistakes in my journaling. :p

TFL!

Emelie - you did a great job. Your English is actually very good.

TO ALL OF YOU WHOSE FIRST LANGUAGE IS NOT ENGLISH: Please feel free to journal in whatever language you feel most comfortable in and would want in your layouts if you were going to print them. Remember - these challenges are just a guide. The layouts are for YOU and YOUR family so don't feel that you need to change anything for my sake or anyone else that may view your layouts.

Thank you Robyn!!!
As a matter of fact, I like to journal both in French and in English, it depends on the subject. ;)
But I think I'm going to make a French version of this challenge... for the future generations.

See ya!

I never knew my Uncle Dave. This is the only picture I have of him as an adult. I have a ton of heritage photos to do, but your challenge spurred me to start with Uncle Dave, who was killed on the USS Destroyer Duncan in October of 1942.

For me, the journaling was the easy part. I've been doing genealogy with my parents since I was a little girl. But the B/W part wasn't as easy -- I kept wanting a softer effect. However, now that it's done, I like it. In fact, I may use this technique to put together a mini genealogy for my Mom for Christmas.

Here's mine:

Donna - such an interesting read. I'm with you on struggling with the b&w layouts!

Interesting challenge this week but I liked it. Does limit what you can do though.

Here are mine:

My Dad Page 1 (http://www.scrapartist.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=11468&nocache=1)

My Dad Page 2 (http://www.scrapartist.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=11469)

Looking forward to new challenges each week.

Thank you so much for playing! That story about your dad's dad is so fascinating. Times were so different then.

I have tried uploading my journal page several times but it keeps telling me that the journaling page exceeds the file size limt...the file is only 729.0K

Any suggestions on what I should do to get the page 2 journaling page to upload?

Thanks
Debbie

Okay...I thought I finished this but when I read other layouts I realized that I had done it wrong. I wrote about my time with my grandma...sort of a memorial page but not about her in the pic as you had clearly stated in the 1st post! I'll try to work on this later...

These pages are truly wonderful! And I know that future generations are going to thank you for taking the time to record this information.

Debbie - did you get the upload problem fixed? Normally it is best to keep your gallery layouts to between 500-600 pixels and close to 100 kb in size. Some galleries won't let you upload any bigger than 100 kb. If you use Photoshop, I can help you with how to get it that size. If not, I believe there may be a tutorial here about uploading to the gallery.

Thanks for this challenge - I used it to make several 2-page layouts for my Mom for mother;s day. Most of the photos were old, B&W, so that part was easy. She likes the journalling, whatever it says. I had a photo of my grandparents and another couple out to dinner. Didn;t know anything else about it, so the journalling was all questions. (1940? 1960?)

I am so happy you used this challenge to make some layouts. It's quick, easy and looks cool when finished.
