OK, this one is an advanced tip... I'm saying that right off the bat! :) I didn't even know you could do this until today... and I think there are some great photo editing possibilities within this technique.
I found this tutorial on Jay Arraich's Photoshop Tips site.
http://www.arraich.com/ps6_tips_mmstyles1.htm
(by the way... many of the tips I post come from this site... it's a great little resource).
I followed the tutorial and got the desired results (I recommend if you want to understand this technique that you should do so to). Then I tried the technique on a photo. Here is an example of what I was able to do:
http://www.scrapartist.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=7668&limit=recent
In this photo, I put a "layer style" on the mask of an "inner glow" and an "inner shadow" on this. I was just experimenting with the styles to see what I could get that mask to do, and I took some of the red out of his face.
I think the time to remember this technique is when normal photo editing methods fail. If layer styles aren't working quite the way you would like to get the desired results, add a mask and see if applying layer styles to the mask will help you get to where you want to go.
Like I said... this week it's a bit more involved, but it was cool to learn that you could even apply a layer style to a mask! :)
Have a great week! :)
