How about another photography challenge? Now, if you haven't done last week's, no worries! You can go back and do these at any time!

This week I'd like to talk about composition in photos. Most specifically the "Rule of Thirds". This may be something you are familiar with as a scrapper. :)

As always, I have some handy links for you:

http://www.betterphoto.com/exploring/tips/thirds.asp
http://www.apogeephoto.com/jan2002/altengarten.shtml

Now, I think after reading these, you will be able to get the idea if you are not familiar with it already.

My challenge this week for you is to take two photos. Take one normal snapshot without even really giving much thought to composition, now take another with a little more thought to the "rule of thirds". Post them side by side...and if you're feeling really adventurous, put a grid on both photos and explain why the rule of thirds worked or didn't work for you!

Rule of thirds...I always find that one tricky. Thanks for the links, off to read and have a try, great challenge Jenn!

OK...this is my dd's chocolate fondu on my dirty stove. That's as creative as I get this morning LOL. Firstly, I took a conventional photo of it, centered with a huge, distracting hob at the bottom and an uninteresting background of straight tiles. Using rule of thirds, I moved my camera up and to the left to get rid of the distracting bottom part, and paid more attention to the direction of the tiles in the background also, to add a bit of dimension to the negative space in my photo.

Here's the rule of thirds grid drawn over my photo (hoping I did this correctly!)

Oh, and look at the great reflection you got in the fondu pot by changing the angle of the framing!

Great!

Alright, I *sort of* cheated on my challenge, because I used a picture that I already had.... it was one that I took of Jaden and it's not a super spectacular picture... she's swinging her arms and definitely not perfectly posed of anything, but it always stuck out to me as a striking photo... I just really like it, and never knew why.... now I know why. Jenn reminded me about the rule of thirds.... I'm pretty sure that's why this photo in particular works out so well.... because of the rule of thirds. So I included another photo I had taken of her where she's centered (still cute, but centered) and put it next to the cool off centered angled one.... you can see the difference. The off centered angled one is just a more interesting photo I think. Again, I know it's not perfect... it's just more interesting. I also put a grid over the photo's to show how the rule of thirds works in the "good" photo and not at all in the "bad" photo.
