Please note: Heritage Challenges are now WEEKLY!!!!
This week's challenge is to use ephemera in your heritage layout (remember heritage is pictures from the 1970's and before). And if you're not quite sure what ephemera means, I just looked it up and it is defined as: Printed matter of passing interest.
So dig through your stuff and find some printed material to scan. It can be a birth announcement, a newspaper clipping, a birthday card, a report card, a ticket stub ... the options are endless! Perhaps you have the birth announcement from when you were born - scan it and use it!
I the last Heritage Challenge, I did a layout called Triplets (http://www.scrapartist.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=4485&cat=585&perpage=24). This is a good example of ephemera. And I have done another new layout using a memorial card from my great-great-great grandma's funeral. See this layout here (http://www.scrapartist.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=5055&limit=last7). There is also a second page (http://www.scrapartist.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=5054&cat=585&perpage=24) to this layout with the journaling.
Have fun and I can't wait to see what you come up with!

I have a question about scanning document kind of things. Yours are so clear - at what resolution do you scan them. I had scanned my birth certificate but it didn't come out clear.

I scan everything at 300dpi and usually at 200% (300% for REALLY small things). And that works for me. However, I know many people that scan at higher dpi's ... like 600 or even 1200 and they swear by that. In scanning, bigger is always better because you can always size down but never up. I hope that helps.

I have had several of you tell me you have NO heritage ephemera. Well, for this challenge, I will make some exceptions. I just want you to learn how to scan documents and other ephemera. So, perhaps you have the obituary from a grandparent or great-grandparent. Or maybe one of your report cards from when you were a child. Or even a ticket from the first concert you ever went to. Scan it ... and tell about it in a layout. Future generations will thank you!

Here's mine.
I have another Valentine that was given to my Uncle Joe obviously at the same time. I'll try to get it done too so I can have a two-page spread. I do have a question though, if I submit the other lay-out later in the week, is there any way I can have displayed in the Gallery side-by-side?

I love it Doris! No you're going to make me break out the cards! And I don't know that I cant to open that can of worms!! I'll be scrapping forever. But your layout is just so good. And for your question ... unfortunately, they will not be side by side in the heritage gallery if anyone else a layout between now and then. However, they will be side by side in your personal gallery.

I have no excuse not to get to scanning some of these things I've had sitting in my chest! Jeff just bought me my own scanner sitting right next to me and my laptop, here in my den! I used to have to run out to his office!
So I will do my best to get one done, girlie!

Aude, that is great! I didn't realize how many French food words I learned while living in Canada ... all of the food labels are in French and English. My favorite is still P'**** Orsons (Teddy Grahams) - it cracked me up every time I read the label (for obvious reasons!).

Laura, use whatever you have - or if you have downloaded some ephemera in some kits, use that. I know this is a hard one. I promise next week's challenge will be easier!

I'm not sure if my Printed matter passes for what is required in this challenge but here it is anyway. Oh the printed matter is my mums printed skirt.

Karon - pick a picture you like, then think of something that would go well with that picture and do a Google search for that search term. Then sort by picture search and finally by large pictures. You can usually get some good ephemera right off the net!

Okay, here's mine. For all of the heritage pics I have, I had no ephemera that I knew of. My Mom has those. But I found this article about my grandmother that I had copied a few years ago. I love this story of her buying a tractor trailer to haul explosives.
